Faith Kiio
Faith Kiio is the Founder Literacy And Water Movement to aid struggling communities in Massachusetts and around the globe. Faith was born and raised in the semi-arid Makueni region of Kenya but moved to the United States. Faith started a program in Kenya to serve underprivileged communities that have no access to clean water, healthcare, or education.
Why Did You Start Literacy And Water Movement ?
“It all started with cabbage. Well, maybe not…” Said the Founder.
Upon completion of high school, Faith felt her dream of pursuing a college education seemed unattainable, as she was being raised in a low-income, single-parent family. Instead, she helped her single mother and four siblings by selling cabbages. Her experience selling cabbage and learning the trade was difficult. She faced many struggles that she was forced to overcome. Faith hustled among seasoned brokers and traders in the market, slept under trucks in the market, and shared her little earnings with the watchmen so that they could keep an eye on her as she slept.
At the break of dawn, she would buy from the first truck to arrive and sell to the first traders to come. She suffered losses at first but soon learned the trade, established good networks, improved her business acumen, and started making money. Then, she saw her first American dollar and thought about what it would be like to live in a land with such a strong currency. She then embarked on her first journey to the United States. Using the proceeds from the sale of cabbages, she managed to pay part of her college tuition fee. Years later, well-educated and established, Faith may have left the life of struggles in Kenya, but she has not forgotten them.
Faith’s experience in Kenya helped her to realize that everyone deserves a chance to make their life better, but that not everyone receives the opportunity to do so like she had. Faith decided that she wanted to provide opportunities to other Kenyans and give back to her native country and Massachusetts. Faith’s mission is to provide opportunities to create a better life for underprivileged families, one person and one project at a time.
Faith believes that if people come together, they can make a difference in the lives of underprivileged families
